Cubert Primary School

English - Writing

Intent

At Cubert School, we believe every child has a voice worth sharing. Our mission is to cultivate motivated, thoughtful authors who recognise that their words have the power to entertain, inform, and persuade.

Beginning in the Early Years, we prioritise oral fluency, through stories and conversationas the vital foundation for written expression. As pupils progress, they master the ability to organise complex ideas into structured, precise and fluent prose.

Driven by the Grammarsaurus approach, our curriculum integrates grammar and vocabulary within meaningful contexts. By analysing high-quality model texts, children learn to write with specific intent, tailoring their tone to suit any audience. We ensure every child leaves Cubert School as a confident writer, capable of crafting language with clarity, creativity, and complete control.

Aims

In writing we aim to:

  • Teach pupils to write clearly, accurately, and coherently, adapting their language and style for a diverse range of audiences and purposes.

  • Develop strong foundations in EYFS. A primary focus on gross and fine motor skills in the Early Years ensures children develop the necessary physical stamina and fluency for comfortable, legible, and eventually speedy handwriting.

  • Ensure every child masters the mechanics of writing. Every child will develop a strong command of transcription, including quick and accurate spelling, and the consistent use of correct punctuation and grammatical structures.

  • Enrich vocabulary through literature. By engaging with notable authors and high-quality texts, pupils will acquire a wide vocabulary and an understanding of linguistic conventions to enhance the impact of their own writing.

  • Ensure pupils use precise grammatical terminology to discuss, plan, and evaluate their work, using spoken language to "think aloud" and refine their ideas before and during the writing process.

  • Foster engagement and stamina. Through daily opportunities to write, children will develop a positive attitude and the necessary stamina to produce engaging narratives, well-structured explanations, and creative compositions.
