Cubert Primary School

Geography

Intent

At Cubert School, our Geography curriculum is designed to ignite a lifelong curiosity and fascination with the world and its diverse people. We believe that Geography is fundamental in helping children make sense of their surroundings, exploring the intricate relationships between people, places, and the environments that connect them. Through our curriculum, our pupils develop the insight needed to navigate and protect the world they inhabit.

Our primary goal is to equip children with the knowledge and skills to understand the physical and human processes that shape our planet. We aim to foster globally aware individuals who recognise their personal responsibility toward the environment and understand the interconnections between local actions and global impacts.

Geography at Cubert School begins with our youngest learners and builds progressively:

  • Early Years (EYFS): Children begin by "Understanding the World," considering people, cultures and communities and the natural world. They begin by exploring their immediate environment and local community to build a firm foundation of spatial awareness, building a wider and deepening understanding of an ever-increasing area and range of issues as they progress through our school.
  • Key Stages 1 & 2: Geography is taught as a discrete subject. Learning is structured around key questions and learning objectives that are used to develop understanding and deepen knowledge of the topic, ensuring coverage of the National Curriculum - Locational Knowledge, Place Knowledge, Human and Physical Geography, Geographical Skills and Fieldwork.

By developing specific geographical skills, our children make sense of our own surroundings through learning about our own local area, rural, coastal and urban, asking geographical questions and comparing the locality with that of other regions in the United Kingdom and in the rest of the world. Through their growing knowledge and understanding of human and physical geography across the world, our children gain a deep understanding of how our local environment differs from others, and how environments have an impact on the way people live. They are able to collect, analyse data and interpret a range of geographical sources, including maps, globes and aerial photographs.

By the time children leave Cubert School, they will have developed the ability to think about their own place in the world. They will have developed a sense of responsibility towards the environment and an understanding of the interaction and interconnections between physical and human processes. The many opportunities and challenges that will arise during their lifetime will link to geography – personal, local, national and global - and our children will need to think like geographers to become globally aware individuals.

Aims

  •  Inspire pupils' curiosity and fascination with the world by exploring the defining human and physical characteristics of globally significant places, both terrestrial and marine, helping them make sense of their own place in the world.
  • Support pupils to understand the processes that shape our planet, developing an awareness of how physical and human features are interdependent and how these relationships bring about spatial variation and change over time.
  • Equip pupils with the expert skills needed to think like geographers, enabling them to confidently collect, analyse, and communicate data through meaningful fieldwork experiences that deepen their understanding of geographical processes.
  • Enable pupils to interpret diverse sources of information, including maps, globes, aerial photographs, and Geographical Information Systems (GIS), while teaching them to communicate their findings through cartography, data, and writing at length.
  •  Foster a sense of environmental responsibility by providing opportunities to explore the interconnections between people and place, ensuring every child leaves primary school as a globally aware individual ready to navigate personal, local, and national challenges.
